Chef at Alarz (Arrecife, Lanzarote, Spain)

José Francisco Medina

Born in the village of Tinajo (Lanzarote), this young chef has grown professionally outside the Island, only to return to it to apply all that he's learnt.

He has a degree in Gastronomy and Culinary Arts from the Basque Culinary Centre. He has worked in a number of places, including Iñigo Lavado in 2012 (Irún, Basque Country), Tickets* in 2013 (Barcelona), Aqua*** in 2014 (Wolfsburg, Germany) and Miramar** in 2015 (Llança, Girona).

At the end of 2015, he returned to Albert Adrià's elBarri as chef de partie at the Hoja Santa* restaurant, where he was soon promoted to sous chef and then chef de cuisine in 2017. He kept the star he won in 2015 and will hold this position until 2020.

In the end, however, he felt the call of his homeland and returned to his native Lanzarote to take charge of the Alarz Bahía Club restaurant. With this new project, Medina intends to reinvent the concept of the beach bar, combining the flavours of the sea and the land of Lanzarote with new gastronomic trends.
